Portland, Oregon

The Portland Metro region has the second highest percent of LGBT residents of any metropolitan area in the nation, according to a Gallup poll released this week.

About 5.5 percent of adults in the region identify as LGBT.

That's a jump from 1990, when Portland ranked 11th and only 2.3 of every 1,000 households in the region identified as same-sex, according to Census data analyzed by
The Williams Institute.

Lest you think the Castro days are really over: San Francisco has the highest percentage of residents who identify as LGBT at 6.2 percent. The California city came in at No. 1 in 1990, too.

Austin, New Orleans and Seattle round out the top five. Birmingham, Alabama, has the lowest percent of any metropolitan city.

The results are based on responses to the question, "Do you, personally, identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender?" -- included in more than 374,000 Gallup Daily telephone interviews conducted between June 2012 and December 2014.

A 2013 Pew Research Center survey showed that just 12 percent of LGBT adults considered the levels of LGBT social acceptance in a city as a major factor in relocation decisions.

Attractions

Pittock Mansion

Henry Pittock (c.1834-1919) was born in London, England but grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In 1853, when Henry was 19, he headed west on the Oregon Trail to seek his fortune. A year later, his future wife Georgiana Burton (c.1845-1918) left Missouri with her family and headed west as well. When Henry and Georgiana arrived in the area, Portland was a frontier "stumptown" competing with Oregon City to become the major trade and industrial center for the region.

Oregon Zoo

The land of the zoo, indeed this entire area of the confluence of the Columbia and Willamette rivers, is the traditional homeland and fishing and gathering range of tribes throughout the region. Its wealth of resources sustained Indigenous people who lived here both year-round and seasonally. These tribes have honored, protected, and stewarded these resources for thousands of years and continue to do so today. Oregon Zoo honors with gratitude the land itself and the peoples who have cared for it since time immemorial. This calls all of us to commit to continuing to learn how to be better stewards of the land we call home.

Relocated in 2002 to it's current home the café takes design cues from the art deco period. The crown jewel of the space is a drivable 1961 pink Cadillac convertible in the dining room.
