Given the amazing feedback we received about our feature on international nude gay beaches , we thought we’d expand the search and feature some more gay beaches, this time in the USA; especially in light of the upcoming Memorial Day holiday which will see many queer people heading out to the shore. And while not all of these locations allow nude sunbathing, you’re sure to find a few spots on this list that will allow you to show off your hair…. down there!

So, grab your favorite bears, cubs, chubs, chasers, wolves and otters and head out to one of these amazing beaches where you can strut your stuff, take in the sights and be your authentic self in the safety of a queer setting.

And as always, don’t forget your sunscreen!

12th Street Beach, Miami Beach, Florida
The 12th Street Beach is a stone’s throw away from the Lincoln Mall, a pedestrian walkway lined with high-end shops and fine dining restaurants, such as Juvia, a rooftop hot spot. On the beach, LGBTQ+ folks can bask in the sun, enjoy the serenity of the ocean, or take shelter at Palace Drag Bar & Lounge, known for its jaw-dropping drag show performances. After a long day on the beach, head back to your hotel room for a shower, and then head out again to enjoy the local gay nightlife, including Score and Twist.

Baker Beach, San Francisco
San Francisco has a long legacy of activism alongside a ton of mighty fine institutions all geared towards the LGBTQ+ community. Of these, Baker Beach in the Presidio district is the place to go nude in friendly company. The beach also has an amazing view of the bay’s famous Golden Gate Bridge and the Marin Headlands. Most LGBTQ sunbathers are located on the northern end of the beach, an area popular among locals for picnics and chilling amongst cliff surroundings.

Black’s Beach, San Diego, California
San Diego is a beach city, and Black’s Beach is the popular beach hangout for LGBTQ+ travelers. In fact, it’s one of the oldest nude beaches in the United States. Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife, which includes the dolphins and seals that make frequent appearances offshore. Just a word of caution: The climb from the beach back up the cliffs is a tough hike.

Condado Beach, San Juan, Puerto Rico
Head to San Juan, Puerto Rico to take a dip in the turquoise-blue waters of Condado Beach, where even in the winter, water temps average around 82 balmy degrees Fahrenheit in December. The unofficial gay beach is a comfortable spot for PDA and there’s a queer-friendly bar, Oasis Tapas & Lounge off the beach. Stay at the gay-owned Coqui del Mar, where they arrange adventure tours, including rainforest treks and naked beach tours.

Little Beach, Maui
LGBTQ sun worshipers converge on “Little Beach” in Makena State Park, located about 1 mile past the Maui Prince Hotel. We recommend wearing sturdy shoes to make the trek over a steep lava-flow trail. Although it’s not officially clothing-optional, you’ll find a few uninhibited beachgoers here.

El Matador Beach, Malibu, Los Angeles
Although El Matador Beach is a hidden rocky cove, the postcard-perfect beach with sea caves is not as isolated as you might think. It’s popular for photo shoots, bodyboarding, and bodysurfing, and it has a well-known reputation but has a reputation as a nudist beach border on urban legend.

The Pines Beach and Cherry Grove Beach, Fire Island, New York
Fire Island Pines is known as the fun party beach with several LGBTQ-owned shops, vacation rentals, and a vibrant bar and club scene. It’s not uncommon to see young buff bodies on this beach. Another popular stretch of sand, Cherry Grove Beach, attracts a slightly older crowd, and women, who prefer Cherry Grove’s low-key, artistic vibe.

Haulover Beach, Miami, Florida
Go fly a kite on Haulover Beach Park is on Collins Avenue about 10 miles north of South Beach. Seriously, you can rent a kite from Skyward Kites, which has been in business for more than 20 years. The 2.5-mile-long stretch of pristine sands is great for swimming and surfing, but a half-mile on the northern end is designated for nude sunbathers. The queer crowd tends to frequent the most northern reaches. Parking is available on the west side of Collins with walkways to the beach.

Herring Cove Beach and Race Point Beach, Provincetown, Massachusetts
LGBTQ resort community at the tip of Cape Cod, Provincetown ranks among the world’s great seaside vacation destinations. In addition to hosting its annual Gay Pride celebration, P-town is home to upscale inns, fine art galleries, and superb seafood restaurants. Peak tourism season for the New England town is usually July through August. We recommend staying in the town’s West End. Go for a fun bike ride and go sunbathing on Herring Cove Beach or Race Point Beach.

Poodle Beach, Rehoboth Beach, Deleware
Poodle Beach is the gay section on Rehoboth Beach. It can get crowded here during the peak season, but there is an energetic social scene. Lesbians prefer North Shores Beach. And after the beach, most gay men grab a few beers or cocktails at the Aqua Grill or Blue Moon, 2 of the town’s popular gay hangouts. Rehoboth is the quintessential beach town, with dozens of small shops, restaurants that serve up fresh seafood from the Chesapeake Bay, and a boardwalk with a few amusement thrills and arcades.

Sebastian Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Florida
If you’re in Fort Lauderdale, head to Sebastian Street Gay Beach, located near most of the gay resorts, such as the Grand Resort & Spa and The Worthington . Along with dozens of gay-friendly shops along the beach, the city’s gayborhood, Wilton Manors, has a variety of fun LGBTQ+ bars and restaurants, such as Hamburger Mary’s, Thai Me Up, Hunters, Gym Bar, the Eagle, and DrYnk, where you order a handcrafted cocktail on their spacious outdoor patio.

Smathers Beach and Higgs Beach, Key West, Florida
LGBTQ beachgoers have two gay-friendly options in Key West . The first is Smathers Beach, the biggest public beach in town and it’s considered one of the best gay beaches in the U.S. Volleyball, kayaking, windsurfing, jet-skiing, and cycling are a few alternative activities other than sunbathing. Food trucks and public restrooms are located nearby. At the end of Reynolds Street, queer sunbathers also converge on Higgs Beach to socialize, snorkel, swim in the calm, shallow waters, or walk their pooch in the dog park. For a little culture, the Key West AIDS Memorial and the slavery-era African Cemetery are nearby.

Tybee Island, Georgia
We all know Savannah to have a bit of queer charm and nightlife, but just 20 miles away, LGBTQ+ travelers can visit Tybee Island for a weekend getaway – free of pretension and judgment. The island has a laidback vibe, quirky gift shops, patio bars, and hosts the family-friendly Tybee Equality Fest in September. If you need more things to do and see, Savannah is a short car ride away!

Will Rogers State Park Beach, Los Angeles, California
Will Rogers – sometimes known as Ginger Rogers Beach – has been LA’s unofficial gay beach since the 1960s. About 15 miles from West Hollywood, the stretch for fun in the sun is near Lifeguard Stand #18 and includes volleyball courts and occasional beachside dance parties. There’s parking, a bike path, and Santa Monica Blue Bus 9 stops nearby.

Hotels are a bargain, and crowds are gone.

Summer is the perfect time to visit the “Free State of Florida” (to use their new moniker). The crowds are gone, and the hotels are a bargain. The breeze off the ocean makes it tolerable and the nights and mornings are nice.

On this trip, I went to a conference in West Palm Beach and stayed at the fabulous Hilton which features a huge swimming pool and is steps away from the shops and bars of City Place (including my favorite salad place, Sweetgreen). Then I took the new Brightline high speed rail to Fort Lauderdale and spent 4 nights in Wilton Manors, the gay city surrounded by Fort Lauderdale which is where the boys (and bars) are. Actually, it’s more of a Palm Springs crowd complete with its own Hunters (of Palm Springs fame). Wilton Manors, the island city, is completely surrounded by Fort Lauderdale (ok, Oakland Park to the north) but is its own city. And very gay. They even have their own police department and Library. It’s a cute fun, walkable city.

WHAT TO DO?

The Sebastian Street Beach is a must. It goes on for miles. Bring plenty of sunscreen and water. There was a nice breeze the day I went, and the water was not too warm.

Walk or run with the Frontrunners. They meet Wednesdays at 7 p.m. in Holiday Park in Fort Lauderdale as well as on Saturdays and Sundays. They have lots of special events like the pool party and bowling party when I was there.

Walk along the RiverWalk in downtown Fort Lauderdale to see the many boats on display.

Hang out by the pool at your hotel.

Take the Brightline high speed rail down to Miami in just 30 minutes. They even sell lunch along the way. You can get to the station by taking the #50 bus from Wilton Manors which runs every half hour or so and costs just $2.

THE NIGHTLIFE

All the bars are in Wilton Manors close to each other on Wilton Drive. I like the happy hours at Hunters and Johnsons (which runs until 9 pm in the summer although the cover starts at 8 pm). The Lit is fun and has a free shuttle to their other property. Georgie’s Alibi Monkey Bar has drag shows, dancing, and more. The Gym is a bar across the street. There are around 10 to choose from plus great restaurants.

WHERE TO EAT?

The Java Joes Coffee House makes a great Café Americano in Wilton Manors. You will find them at 2230 Wilton Drive. Bring your dog.

I liked the Sweetgreens in West Palm. Try the new chopped steak salad or the miso glazed salmon salad. You will find them at 701 S. Rosemary. The Ruth Chris across from the Hilton is very good. The Treetops Bar atop the Canopy Hotel is also fun.

The Publix Market (both in West Palm near the Hilton in City Place and in Wilton Manors at 2633 N. Dixie Highway) has hot food, soups, chili, and sub sandwiches made to order. Try the watermelon with feta cheese summer salad. This Florida based chain is my favorite go to place. They even had New Jersey blueberries not to mention tropical fruits.

The Sprouts Market also has food to go.

Get the empanadas to go at the Chevron Wilton Food Mart, 2425 Wilton Drive.

WHERE TO STAY?

I stayed at the small Calypso Inn in Wilton Manors at 610 NE 26th. I also have stayed in the Home2Suites/Tru in Flagler Village in Fort Lauderdale. The Wilton Manor Suites is also new and nice. If you stay in Wilton Manors, you can walk (or take the Circuit shuttle) everywhere.

If you want to spend a few days in West Palm Beach, the Hilton is amazing. Great service, great food, and a great resort. I paid just $179 with no resort fee or surprise charge. Best of all, they had a cappuccino coffee maker in my room by Nestle. Who doesn’t like their own gourmet coffee in the room? Plus bathrobes and slippers to wear down to the pool where I did lap swims. And a free shuttle around town at no charge. An exceptional hotel.

GETTING AROUND

I flew Southwest to and from Fort Lauderdale and took the Tri Rail commuter rail from the airport station (in nearby Dania Beach, the only truly tropical climate zone in the lower 48) to West Palm Beach. $5 is all you can ride weekend rate. On the way back, I took the fabulous new Brightline high speed rail back. It goes 100+ mph back and paid $24 (West Palm to Fort Lauderdale). However, fares vary based on demand (aka dynamic pricing) and the locals complain it has gotten too expensive. (My coworker paid $200 from Orlando to West Palm). Still it beats driving or the headaches of flying! And congrats to Southwest for being the only airline to escape the Cloudflare mess.

The Circuit local electric shuttle serves both Wilton Manors, Fort Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach. It’s an open air shared taxi. And you can take the Broward County Bus as well. Rental car not needed since you can take UBER for everything else. (Take the #50 bus to the #1 bus to get back to FLL.)

THE CULTURE

South Florida (Miami Dade, Fort Lauderdale, and the Palm Beaches is an interesting mix of people from the Northeast (New York) plus from Cuba, Venezuela, and Columbia. Your Spanish will come in handy. It’s also very gay friendly. You can even buy the New York Post and the Long Island Daily News at Publix and CVS. And they even have empanadas to go at the Chevron in Wilton Manors. Yum.

Pride Kicks Off with VIP Cruise for LGBT+ Charity Group's 5th Annual Event

Fort Lauderdale, known for its stunning beaches and vibrant nightlife, transformed into a floating rainbow wonderland for the 2024 Floatarama VIP boat cruise-party-bacchanal yesterday. The Catalina, a two-level floating wedding venue, was marvelously tricked out in rainbow colors, glitter, and, of course, an abundance of booze.

Over 450 enthusiastic participants boarded the ship from the Gallery One Hotel at Sunrise, ready to set sail under sunny skies. Excitement was palpable as the gangplank was pulled up and the Catalina began its journey along the Intracoastal. But in true South Florida fashion, the weather had a surprise in store. A fierce storm rolled in, bringing rough waters, dark clouds, and heavy rain. Despite the downpour, spirits remained high thanks to ample quantities of booze and platters of food that kept everyone busy and happy for the hour or so of bad weather.

Downstairs, Mayor Dean Trantalis held court at the below-decks bar, while the younger, muscular, skimpily-clad attendees kept the party alive upstairs. MC Fay What? and DJ Bomi, got the crowd moving with a high-energy mix of pop anthems and dance hits.

As the storm began to subside, the hunky bears of "Cape Ann Marine Towing" took control of the vessel for the delicate process of towing it in reverse up the narrow and crowded New River through the canyons of Fort Lauderdale's downtown towers. Miraculously, the sun broke out just as the towing began, and the party moved into high gear. Suddenly, to quote the Weather Girls, it was "Raining Men" as hundreds of high-spirited revelers massed onto the open decks to dance. Onlookers waved rainbow flags from balconies and breezeways along the route, adding to the festive atmosphere.

The Catalina made its way to Old Riverside Historic Park, where a somewhat diminished-by-weather flotilla of rainbow boats with skippers and crew had gathered. Now moving again in a forward direction, the entire parade made its way swiftly back through the downtown canyons, passing under raised drawbridges for a speedy, prideful, and colorful trip back to the homeport, Gallery One Hotel.

Cheers echoed across the decks as the Catalina docked, and the party-goers prepared to head to the afterparty at Hunter's Nightclub in Wilton Manors, the event's sponsor.

Fort Lauderdale’s Floatarama, now in its fifth consecutive year, is much more than just a sizzling party in the sun. It’s a celebration of LGBTQ+ pride and community, with proceeds going towards supporting LGBTQ youth facing bullying and educational challenges. With over $140,000 already raised, this event continues to make a significant impact.

As Scott Schramm, president of Floatarama, put it: “We are now the largest on-water Pride event in the U.S. It’s a chance to spread joy and love, and just have a great time.”

And a great time it was. Here’s to Floatarama 2024 – a day of rain, shine, and endless pride. Cheers, mates! Now, off to the afterparty!

HOT FUN IN THE CHICAGO SUN

Your Windy City Summer Getaway

Chicago is a great city to visit any time of year, but it is even better in the summer: the Lakefront trail, the beaches, bicycling, festivals, and more. And it’s one of the most LGBTQ+ friendly cities in the world. And the beaches along Lake Michigan are simply incredible.

WHAT TO DO

Osterman Beach is the LGBTQ beach and also has an outdoor restaurant. It’s a wonderful way to spend the day enjoying the refreshing Lake Michigan waters. (CTA Stop Thornton on the Red LIne, then walk east and south to the beach.) Many of Chicago’s great beaches features magnificent views of the stunning downtown skyscrapers.

Sunday Funday at the bars on Halsted Street is necessary. Sidetrack (the mega video bar with a great rooftop terrace) features showtunes on Sundays where the crowd signs along to the classics. There is something fun going on there every night. Drink prices are reasonable ($9 for Chandon champagne).

Gogos (men and women) are featured at Hydrate as you can dance the afternoon away with a live DJ. You will find them at 3458 N. Halstead.

Cell Block up the street has a frisky leather crowd.

Find a complete list of bars and a map in GRAB Magazine (GRABChicago.com). Most of the bars are in North Alstead (formerly known as Boystown (between Addison and Belmont on Halsted) although a few are found in Andersonville north of that area.

I walked with the Frontrunners. They meet at 6:30pm on Tuesday at the Totem Pole at the Lakefront Trail (at Addison) and have dinner afterwards. Lots of runners and walkers.

Walk the new RiverWalk along the Chicago River downtown. It’s new and now offers restaurants and bars as well as architecture boat tours. They even have a new winery, City Wintery. There are boat rentals, water taxis, kayaking, and more. It’s a new attraction right of the shopping on Michigan Avenue.

Enjoy the incredible skyscraper architecture. Take a boat tour run by the Chicago Architecture Foundation or visit the Chicago Architecture Center. Like all downtowns, Chicago is struggling in the post Covid world of teleworkers that make the need for offices less urgent.

Mark your calendar for Chicago Pride (in June with a festival June 22-23 and a Parade on June 30) as well as a Pride in the Park celebration in Grant Park on June 30. Also fun is Halsted Market Street days (in August), another signature LGBTQ festival.

WHERE TO STAY

I always stay at the Hotel Versey by Wyndham, 644 West Diversey Parkway (at Clark and Broadway), in the very walkable Lakeview neighborhood. Trader Joe’s is across the street if you need anything. Stan’s Donuts in next door. You can walk to the bars in Northalstead and Broadway Avenue is full of quaint local shops and restaurants, including a Marianos (upscale grocery store featuring fresh juices, a salad bar, a hot food bar, and a wine bar. Hotel Versey guests enjoy free entry to the LA Fitness in the Century Plaza next door which also has a Landmarks Art Theater if you want to catch a film. Parking is just $30 for 3 days (a deal) for hotel guests as well. Watch out for the sneaky $6 charge for bottled water on your bill, though. Hotel rates vary by demand so avoid Cubs weekends and other festivals. Weekday rates tend to be lower. The property is under new owners.

Other hotels in the neighborhood including the Willows, Best Western Hawthorn Terrace, City Suites, and the Majestic.

Heart o Chicago Motel north of Andersonville offers free parking and is walkable to the north side bars.

I avoid the Loop hotels like the plague. There is nothing to do there and it caters to tourists. Stay where the locals live and walk everywhere.

WHERE AND WHAT TO EAT
Chicago is known for its pizza and hot dogs. But a new Pho restaurant on Clark near the Century Plaza looks good. Sample all Chicago foods at the Taste of Chicago Festival September 6-8 (2024).

GETTING THERE

I drove from Indy which is fine until you get near Chicago which features horrendous traffic.

O’Hare and Midway both offer flights with CTA subways into town. You can also take Amtrak.

But once you are here you will not need a car. The CTA has an excellent bus and subway (L) system. Fares are just $2.50. Buy a VENTRA transit card to make boarding bus or L (subway) train hassle-free. The Versey is closest to the Diversey L Line Station on the Brown Line. It is also served by the #36 Broadway bus and #22 Clark Street bus. Or you can walk east to Sheridan and catch the 152, 134 Express, and 143 Express if you want to go to the Loop or shop on Michigan Avenue (or visit the North Street Beach).

GRAB Chicago Magazine comes out monthly (and carries my column). It includes a map at the back of where to find LGBTQ+ businesses in the 2-3 areas of the City that especially cater to the community. It is the only in print and on line publication in the city. Windy City Times is another publication in the city and is only on line.

Chicago has a lot of annoying taxes and fees. My least favorite is the excise tax which tacks on 15% or more for a bottle of wine. They even have a tax on soft drinks and more. There sales tax is already quite high as are the hotel taxes. On the plus side, the hotels in Chicago don’t charge resort fees like are now found in many cities (Palm Springs, Boston, Las Vegas).

O’Hare Airport (ORD) has lots of delayed and cancellations due to its mega side. In the week I was there it was closed twice due to thunderstorms. I try and avoid it. Closer in Midway is a better option as is Amtrak or driving. O’Hare is also a mega hub for American and United making domestic fares pricey.

The Reader (the weekly) is in print again and on line and features lots of musical events and arts coverage.

The Sun Times is now owned by WBEZ public radio and is $2 daily. The Chicago Tribune has cut coverage and laid off staff and charges $4 daily. Circulation has plummeted (I wonder why). WGN (Chicago’s very own) is the local independent channel although it is no longer locally owned. I also like WFLD Fox Chicago for its news and events coverage).

ChooseChicago.com is the visitor website. I thank them for their helpful travel updates.

You will continually be amazed by this friendly city of neighborhoods, the Paris of the Midwest.

Announcing the new version of SMART Ride, the joy ride. (All Lower case- no caps). The theme for this year is "the joy continues! " This is an effort to express the joy that 20 years of the SMART Ride has brought to so many including participants, agencies, and ultimately clients throughout the state of Florida. We want to continue bringing, building and sharing joy to as many lives as we can.

The dates are November 22–23, 2024. Miami to Key West.

All six agencies have committed to playing a role in the new event, For 2024, it will follow the model set out by SMART Ride, including the destination, Miami to Key West. Five agencies will be full beneficiaries.

NEW NATIVE AMERICAN MUSEUM AND SPA A HIT IN THIS GAY FRIENDLY OASIS OF THE WEST

There’s always something new to do in Palm Springs, California and this trip was no exception. The Agua Caliente Cultural Plaza is the new museum downtown just opened and show cases the fascinating history and culture of the tribes in this area. Palm Springs is the premier LGBTQ vacation destination and just received a 100 percent rating from the HRC. The city is part of eight cities in the Coachella Valley.

WHAT TO DO?

Visit the new Agua Caliente Cultural Museum downtown to learn about the history and culture of the Agua Caliente band of the Cahuilla Native Americans. Learn about their history where each canyon had their own separate group. Learn about the Sec He, the mineral springs that the museum sits on top of. Learn about basketry. A 12-minute animated film describes how the Agua Caliente settled in the Coachella Valley. It celebrates their heritage with a gathering place and oasis trail along a stream with native plants. Their new Spa at Sec He is also a hit where you can get a private bath and luxury treatment in the hot mineral spring, All are part of the Agua Caliente Hotel and Resort and Casino complex. Visit Indian Canyon for a hike in an oasis with native palm trees. Walk with the Front Runners and Walkers. They meet near the Mizel Center for a three-mile walk every day except Sunday at 8:00 a.m. It’s a fantastic way to meet folks. They meet in the parking lot at 480 S. Sunrise. Enjoy the LGBT stars on the Palm Springs Walk of the Stars downtown. Truman Capote, Rock Hudson, and other stars used Palm Springs as a retreat from Hollywood. Palm Springs has been a LGBTQ destination since the 1920s. Take in Village Fest Thursday night downtown including visiting the Palm Springs Art Museum which is free at that time. The Village Fest has food vendors and stuff for sale including art. Pick up some dates. The Art Museum has food and music on the outdoor patio. Swim at the Palm Springs Swim Center. The Olympic size pool has a stunning view of the mountains. You will find them at Pavilion Way. Work out at the Steel Gym (formerly the World Gym). It’s extremely popular. Hike on the Lykken Trail just west of downtown off Ramon Road. Enjoy the barrel cacti and other desert plants and the view of Palm Springs.

WHERE TO STAY?

The Descanso Resort (288 E. Camino Monte Vista) is just north of downtown in the Uptown/Arts and Design District. The resort features free bikes, a pool and spa, continental breakfast, and a complimentary poolside lunch. Happy hour runs from 4 to 6 p.m. on weekends. Staff is very attentive. Guests enjoy a salt water pool and spa, a mist-cooling system, and outdoor shower. Every spot in Descanso’s courtyard boasts views of Coachella Valley’s San Jacinto mountains which rise straight up to 11,000 feet from the Valley floor. Other amenities include a 24-hour snack cantina. This was my second stay there and I loved it. Details at DescansoResort.com . Another alternative is the new Twin Palms Resort at 1930 S. Camino Real. They have rooms facing a pool and hot tub plus free use of bikes (and helmets). Enjoy the made to order continental breakfast and lunch delivered at 12:30 p.m. Under the gaze of the San Jacinto mountains, 20 guest rooms and suites open to a swimming pool, spa, and patio space. Take the bike over to the Smoke Tree Plaza to dine out at one of the restaurants like Native Foods or pick up some to go foods at Ralph’s or Jensen’s food stores. Continue on the many bike trails and bike lanes to explore the iconic Twin Palms neighborhood (the original Modernist style of homes are found here) nearby including a ride up to Indian Canyon. Several other inns for men can be found in the Warm Springs neighborhood. Traditional hotels include the Ace Hotel, a hipster hangout which is also in the Twin Palms neighborhood. The new Kimpton Rowan Hotel is also an upscale choice downtown. The Best Western La Brisas is also very handy. I have also stayed at the Saguaro Hotel, this year’s host of the White Party. Always check for resort fees when comparing hotel room prices.

NIGHTLIFE

Most of the bars are on Arenas Road downtown, a one block strip between Indian Canyon and Encilia. Hunters has a fun happy hour and outdoor patio with great drink specials. It’s my favorite (and of the same owners as the one in Wilton Manors, Florida). Streetbar (224 E. Arenas) always has something going on. Go shopping at GayMart (305 E. Arenas). Other fun bars on Arenas Road include Blackbook, Chill Bar, and Dick’s. All feature outdoor seating. Close by is the new hot novel dance bar, Reforma (check out its website for more info). It has large video screens as well. Down the road in the Sunny Dunes area, you will find The Tool Shed (600 E. Sunny Dunes) has a fun leather crowd. Food available like tacos. They have a huge outdoor patio in the back and dancers inside. Nearby is the Club 541 which I hear is fun. You can also shop at Q Trading or Gear and have breakfast at a local favorite in this strip. Over in Cat City (aka Cathedral City, another LGBTQ friendly city in the Coachella Valley) are several fun bars. The Barracks is known for its Sunday beer busts and Wednesday underwear night. The One Eleven is good for talking and it also has drag and bingo crowds.

WHAT AND WHERE TO EAT?

The Coachella Valley is known for its dates, olives, and oranges, and grapefruit. Try a date shake. The Nature’s Health Food and Café features fresh juices and healthy options. Try the fresh squeezed carrot juice and order the quesadillas. You will find them at 555 S. Sunrise.Trio is an excellent choice at 707 N. Palm Canyon. The nearby 849 is particularly good. Both are in Uptown just north of downtown which features trendy shops like Shag. Always remember you are in California and things are different here. You are not in Kansas anymore. The “traditional potato salad” at the LaQuinta Resort lunch buffet was purple. And delicious.

GETTING THERE/GETTING AROUND

I took Southwest Airlines through Denver each way without incident. Get a window seat for the flight into Palm Springs and you will see the Rockies and the Grand Canyon. Southwest now allows you to take an earlier flight for free; a user friendly airline despite their recent woes. Once in Palm Springs, UBER and LYFT can get you around. However, both feature annoying surprise junk fee surcharges for this and that. LYFT went to surge pricing twice, so I took UBER instead. So shop around. You can walk outside the airport and catch your UBER across the street (at City Hall) to avoid the airport surcharge. Or better yet, take the #4 Sunline bus for $1 just west of City Hall (across the street from the airport). The #4 takes you right downtown (which is just two miles west of the airport). Shame on Palm Springs for not having the bus stop inside the airport. You do not need a rental car as they also feature junk surcharges. My friend waited 90 minutes at the counter to get one. If you absolutely must have one, get it for a few days at an off airport location to avoid the fees and the crowds. And if you stay downtown or close to it as I did, you can walk or bike everywhere in the perfect weather of this desert oasis. But beware – you are in Southern California and the car is king. While Palm Springs has put in many new bike lanes and trails, they still have work to do despite having a perfect biking environment (flat with perfect weather).

This dusty town, two hours from Los Angeles has done more for queer history than some of its larger neighbors. Many famous LGBT actors journeyed to Palm Springs to protect themselves from being outed and losing their careers. As a result, the area became the pseudo “what happens in Vegas” destination of the Golden Hollywood era.

It’s home to the world’s largest lesbian event.
